EXP 3 THEMES | The Bridge

Chosen Article: Pedestrian Bridge / JLCG Arquitectos The sinuous and segmented design of the bridge winds above the valley, along a distance of about 220 m. The central bay takes the perpendicularity to the line of the valley. The other two sections are inflected and oriented towards their anchoring points. The connection between the two points is no longer the shortest distance between them. The tensioned geometry of its layout interferes with visual orientation and with the perception of dominating heights of “Serra da Estrela”, on one side, and with the vastness of Cova da Beira on the lower side. Chosen Words: 1) Sinuous 2) Segmented 3) Geometric 4) Inflected 5) Tensioned Sentence: Conventional architectural ideas surrounding structure can be inflected in order to appreciate the segmented, sinuous, fluid characteristics which inform innovative design. THE TWO CONCEPTS / Draft Model

THEME / Sustainability ARCHITECTS / Servo Stockholm (Concept: The Organic) Le Corbusier (Concept: Structure) Interpretation // I have approached my chosen concepts of 'The Organic' and 'Structure' through form and decoration. The first image is a sketch I did which relates to Servo Stockholms use of biomimicry in design. The facade of the entry to the tram stop is supposed to reflect a fanning leaf or palm, whilst acting as a sustainable method of shading the interior spaces. The second image is a combination of my understanding of Servo Stockholms use of biomimicry through the use of a facade drawn from bee hive structures, as well as Le Corbusier's notion of structure and 'lifting' buildings on pilots to free the ground beneath. EXP3 SUBMISSION | THE MOVING ELEMENTS

MOVING ELEMENT 01 I created a 'dome' above the gallery space that can move up and down to create different views from the gallery and the studios, office spaces and workshops below. Two large, triangular windows slice the corners of the dome off to draw light into the building and warp, restrict and expose this light as the dome moves. MOVING ELEMENT 02 In the library, I created a set of walls that can be folded away to divide the library into public and private spaces. These walls impact the view of the large tree in the centre of the bridge. Light still enters all areas of the library through the angled glass roof, despite the folding walls.
